  45. I mentioned to the people here in Columbus about the ACC Newsgroup or that
  46. they had an E-mail address, and immediately they turned around and wanted
  47. to know if A/D Technologies of Atlanta, GA had internet access or some sort
  48. of news cluster made. They are kind of new to the amateur market, but they
  49. have a very nice product. FYI, they will be at Dayton.

  79. This type of activity doesn't bother me, but I have heard the argument
  80. that "Yes, it is non profit, but it is conducting the 'business' of the
  81. organization"  When I hear this argument, I think of the hamfest talk-in
  82. and parking usage of ham radio.  It certainly is the 'business' of the
  83. organization that puts on the hamfest.  What if National Public Radio
  84. (I think they're non-profit) wanted to use amateur radio to coordinate
  85. some activity?
  86.  
  87. It's a complex issue.  I hate it when the government has to lay so many
  88. rules down in concrete.  I wish common sense / courtesy / good judgement /
  89. etc. would work to "control" people's actions.  Several hams helping
  90. out at a church event without interfering with all the other highly
  91. important ham radio communication that goes on in the area seems ok to 
  92. me.

  183. G-TOR, the new faster HF digital mode ...              part 1
  184.  
  185. by Phil Anderson W0XI and others,  from an article in the RTTY
  186. Digital Journal March 1994
  187.  
  188. On New Years Day,  W0XI and WK5M transmitted a 9,718 byte file
  189. from Kansas to WA4EGT in California on 20-meters in 5 minutes,
  190. 20 seconds.  The mode was G-TOR.  Immediately thereafter,  the
  191. file was transmitted again, this time using Pactor. It took 20
  192. minutes,  15  seconds.  Throughout the month of January  these
  193. tests  were  repeated with over one-million bytes  transferred
  194. error-free.  The  average character/second rate for G-TOR  was
  195. 23.7 and for Pactor 8.64.
  196.  
  197. G-TOR,  short  for Golay-TOR,  is an innovation of  Kamtronics
  198. Co.,  Inc.  It is a new HF digital communications mode for the
  199. amateur service.  The error correction coding outlined in MIL-
  200. STD-188-141A forms the basis for G-TOR. In order to keep costs
  201. low yet take advantage of concepts prescribed in the standards
  202. G-TOR  makes  use  of exisiting multi-mode  TNC  hardware  but
  203. establishes a completely new hybrid-ARQ system in firmware.
  204.  
  205. The benefits of these innovations are exceptional:
  206.  
  207.     -  dramatically increased throughput
  208.     -  apparent  reduction in the effects of  interference  an 
  209.        multi-path
  210.     -  low cost.
  211.  
  212. The key features of G-TOR are atypical:
  213.  
  214.     -  extended Golay forward error correction coding
  215.     -  full-frame data interleaving
  216.     -  on-demand  Huffman  data  compression  with  run-length 
  217.        encoding 
  218.     -  link-quality based baud rate: 300, 200, or 100
  219.     -  2.4 second hybrid ARQ cycle
  220.     -  fuzzy acknowledgements
  221.     -  reduced overhead within data frames
  222.     -  standard FSK tone pairs (mark and space).

  245. Solar activity was very low 15th - 20th, and low on April. 
  246.  
  247. The  geomagnetic  field at Learmonth (WA) was unsettled  15th-
  248. 16th except for a minor storm period on 16th. The field was at 
  249. major storm levels on 17th,  reducing to quiet to unsettled by 
  250. end of the 19th,  at which levels it remained until the end of 
  251. the period. 
  252.  
  253. Ionospheric F2 critical frequencies at Sydney on 15th and 18th 
  254. were near normal or depressed by up to 15 per cent,  on  17th, 
  255. frequencies  were  enhanced  by up to 30 per  cent.  Over  the 
  256. remainder  of  the  period  frequencies  were  near  predicted 
  257. monthly values.

  468. During the just-completed shuttle mission, STS-59, astronauts Jay
  469. Apt, N5QWL, and Linda Godwin, N5RAX, used their SAREX 2-meter
  470. equipment for a contact with Astronaut Ken Cameron, R3/KB5AWP, on
  471. assignment at the Russian space facility at Star City, near Moscow.
  472.  
  473. The two astronaut-hams also spoke to cosmonaut Anatoli Artsibartski,
  474. U6MIR. The contacts were made on two successive passes overhead.
  475.  
  476. Jay Apt said ''Ken is my friend and former STS-37 crewmate.  It was
  477. terrific to hear his voice after several months corresponding by
  478. e-mail only.  What a great way to use ham radio.''
  479.  
  480. Cameron and Artsibartski were standing near the Star City statue of
  481. Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, using a hand held transceiver and
  482. 5/8 wavelength whip antenna, standing on a car to increase their
  483. elevation, astronaut Jay Apt related in an Amateur Radio packet
  484. message from space.

  720. in the RFD for it.  (A pre-existing mailing list is a great way
  721. to demonstrate such traffic).

  761. Actually it is a fair question as the term has only been applied in
  762. ham radio jargon since the advent of widespread repeater usage.

  764. Simplex refers to the non-simultaneous flow of data in a computer
  765. connection.   In radio, it refers to a typical non-repeater 
  766. contact whereby each party can only talk while the other is listening.
  767. Additionally, both parties are transmitting and receiving on the
  768. same frequency.

  770. The computer bidirectional capability is called duplex, but that doesn't
  771. refer to a repeater operation as the reality of repeater operation is
  772. that the participants still can only transmit when the other party is
  773. listening.  Over time, the term simplex in amateur radio has more
  774. meaning in terms of both parties using the same frequency to both
  775. transmit and receive (whereas the repeater operation you listen to
  776. the repeater output at one frequency, but the input is a different
  777. frequency).

  787. "direct" which implied simplex communication, and on the
  788. same frequency, since it is possible to communicate in a
  789. "simplex" mode with the two operators on different frequencies
  790. within the same band or crossband. 
  791. One could suggest to another to "go to .52 Direct"
  792. Just adding to the confusion....

  810. Another one of those SWR myths:  The transmitter is NOT matched to the
  811. line. If it was then the SWR would be 1:1 and there would be no reflected
  812. power anyway. The mismatch is the entire system, not just the antenna to
  813. the far end of the transmission line.
